Microsoft cloud outage hits millions of Hotmail users

Millions of Hotmail users were unable to access their accounts for at least two hours this morning after Microsoft’s Cloud suffered an outage, according to reports.
Problems began at around 4 am this morning, however, it was reported in a company blog that Microsoft had sorted the problem by 5.45am, although repairs went on for some time after this. Commenting in its 365 Twitter feed, Microsoft suggested the problems were down to an issue with the Domain Name System.
In addition to Hotmail, the outage affected Office 365 and Skydrive online storage service. This is the second major fault for Microsoft in the last three weeks alone and is particularly concerning since it only went live in June.

This latest cloud hiccup will do nothing to quell the fears many organizations have that migrating to the cloud poses a security risk. In fact, yesterday saw Google Docs and Google Drawings crash for an hour – the reasons for which remain unknown.
